The Loving and Smart Chocolate English Cocker Spaniel
Written on April 28, 2009 – 7:44 am | by English Cocker Spaniel |Whether you are looking for a great show dog or a family pet, the English Cocker Spaniel is a great dog breed. These pups are happy-go-lucky, friendly, alert, intelligent, obedient, outgoing, gentle, sweet, loving and energetic medium sized dogs. There are varying colors associated with the English Cocker Spaniel but one of the more interesting breeds is the chocolate english cocker spaniel (brown in color also called liver). This dog breed is great with kids and very playful. This pup needs regular brisk walks in order to run off energy. The Cocker Spaniel is good for apartments as long as it gets the exercise it needs, but does better if it has a moderately sized yard for play and exercise.
They were originally bred to hunt the woodcock bird; thus the breed name Cocker Spaniel, but they are excellent hunters, trackers and retrievers of any bird or toy (whichever you choose). The first description that is recognized as the English Spaniel was given back in the 1300’s. Around 500 years later, the English Spaniels were divided into 7 separate breeds: The Clumber, the Sussex, the Welsh Springer, the English Springer, the Field, the Irish Water and the Cocker. The colors that are recognized in this breed are black, tan, sable, copper red, red, gold, orange, lemon, silver, blue roan, blue tick and the chocolate english cocker spaniel. Also variations and mixes of the colors together are recognized (i.e. black and tan, chocolate and tan, chocolate white and tan, black white and tan, red and white etc…).
Since these dogs are very healthy, they have very few health problems. They are prone to ear infections as their ears are close to the ground where mites and ticks can infect the ears and if not regularly maintained could cause deafness. Their ears require regular cleaning and inspection. The chocolate english cocker spaniel breeds along with other cocker spaniels are medium shedders. Since they have a lot of hair, they need regular brushing to keep the hair from matting. The hair on their feet should be trimmed even with the base of the feet. This dog breed is a loving, affectionate breed that requires love affection and regular grooming to maintain a happy healthy family pet and/or show dog.
